Professor, Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, UK
Guy first visited Gobabeb in 1990, shortly after his arrival in Namibia to study the behaviour and ecology of desert baboons for his PhD. Ten years later, his research at Tsaobis Nature Park on the Swakop River led to the establishment of the Tsaobis Baboon Project: a long-term study of the Tsaobis baboons and their environment, hosted by Gobabeb. This project has now been running over 25 years, and continues to conduct research and train Namibian graduate students as part of its internship programme.
In the last 15 years, Guy’s research has expanded to investigate the causes of riparian woodland decline that have occurred along the Swakop River since 1990, and to investigate the wider patterns of ecosystem change across Namibia’s ephemeral rivers since the 1800s.
